The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon Book Review

Title: The Sun is Also a Star
Author: Nicola Yoon
Rating: 4/5
Genre: Romance, YA
Released: Available to purchase now.

"How can you trust something that can end as suddenly as it begins?"

This story is different to the ones I've read purely because it's based just in 1 Day. It was actually really interesting following the entire story to see how much your life can change in just a day. The story follows the lives of Natasha who's a 17 year old Jamaican girl whose been living in America since the age of 8 with her Mum, Dad and brother. It also follows Daniel's life who is a Korean boy with the biggest interview for Yale, but does he make it? Or does Natasha change everything?

The story jumps POV's to many different characters that meet throughout the book but the story mainly focuses on the lives of Natasha and Daniel. Natasha's World is turned upside down after finding out that her family has to be deported, and that's all down to her Dad, they've tried everything to stop it from happening but the time has come and she has to leave America that night. Natasha spends the entire day trying to find out a way to get her family to stay, she can't leave, she loves America, it's her home now, and then she finds herself talking to a guy; enter Daniel. She first talks to him in a record store not realising how much her World is about to change...all because of him...

Daniel has the most important interview of his life, he's about to go for an interview for Yale. Yep. Yale. But then it doesn't always go to plan, it never does, does it? What you have plans for doesn't necessarily go how to you want it too, and Daniel and Natasha are about to learn that, all in one day. Daniel spots her losing herself to a song, in the middle of the busy New York street, not a care in the World, he's instantly interested in her and finds himself following her, in a non stalkerish way into the record store and that's where their journey starts.

They spend the entire day together, spending as much time together as they can, getting to know eachother, even if at first, Natasha is adamant that she doesn't want to know him, little does she know she finds herself wanting to get to know him as the hours pass on. Even though Natasha is being deported that night, she's currently got an interview with a lawyer that may or may not help her, and Daniel has an interview for Yale, his parents want him to become a Doctor, become successful, but that isn't what Daniel wants, he wants to become a Poet, but will his parents ever be okay with that? As well as dealing with that he has to deal with his asshole of a brother who doesn't like him and he doesn't hide that either.

The question is, can Natasha and Daniel get through it all? Does Daniel get into Yale? Does Natasha get deported that night? And do Daniel and Natasha fall in love? In just one day?

  1. I have had this on my reading list for a while, following Nicola Yoon's Everything Everything (which I really enjoyed). I loved her writing style. The film was absolutely rubbish though - horrible adaption! This book sounds so good. I particularly like that it's all set in 1 day. It's very seldom a book does that! Very interesting!

    Great synopsis & review!
